Today I thought I’d share a little about what my name means – and what it means to me. I know, it might sound a bit self-indulgent, but stick with me—there’s a fun story here!

“Scott” is a name with roots that trace back to the Old English and Old Norse languages. It originally referred to people from Scotland, or “Scots,” which is a nod to the rich cultural history of the Scottish Highlands.

The name Scott is derived from the Latin “Scotus,” which simply means “a Scotsman” or “a person from Scotland.” It’s a name that carries a sense of ruggedness and resilience, reflecting the hardy nature of the Scottish people.

On a personal note, I love how the name Scott is both classic and versatile. It’s easy to say, easy to spell, and it feels like it’s just the right fit for me.

To me, the name Scott represents a connection to history, a sense of identity, and a touch of tradition. It’s a small but powerfully meaningful piece of who I am, and I’m proud to carry it with me wherever I go.

As for my last name “Asner,” there isn’t much known about it. But from what I was able to find, the surname “Asner” originated in the German-speaking regions of the Austrian Empire, which was mainly situated in the Danube River Basin. Occupational surnames, such as Asner, became widespread in Germany starting in the 12th century. Asner refers to someone who worked with or sold iron.

The Asner surname can be found in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Scotland. According to Ancestry.com, in 1880, Ohio had the highest number of Asner families in the United States, with about 70% of all recorded Asners living there.

I hardly need to remind you, but we live in stressful and anxiety-inducing times. We live in an age in which we are bombarded with a 24-hour news-cycle, which is constantly in hyperdrive, and constant emails, texts, and Zoom calls. There is an increasing blurring of the line between our work and private lives.

While it is challenging, we cannot allow the constant distractions to overwhelm us. This Mental Health Awareness Month, it is more important than ever to slow down, disconnect, and reset.

Mindfulness and Stoicism are timeless frameworks offering profound insights into how we can do so.

Mindfulness, stemming from Buddhist traditions, emphasizes being present in the moment, cultivating awareness, and accepting things as they are without judgment. Numerous studies have confirmed mindfulness’s myriad benefits for mental health and overall well-being.

Philosophers, both ancient and contemporary, have long recognized the importance of mindfulness in leading a fulfilling life. From the Stoics of ancient Greece and Rome to modern thinkers like Thich Nhat Hanh and Jon Kabat-Zinn, the integration of mindfulness into philosophical inquiry has been a recurring theme.

Stoicism is a comprehensive philosophical system that underscores self-awareness, resilience, and virtue. Rooted in the teachings of thinkers like Seneca, Epictetus, and Marcus Aurelius, Stoicism provides practical tools for facing life’s challenges with equanimity and grace.

At the heart of Stoic philosophy is the concept of “living in accordance with nature,” which involves accepting the natural order of the universe and focusing on what is within our control. This echoes the principles of mindfulness, which encourage us to let go of attachments to outcomes and instead focus on the present moment.

By integrating mindfulness practices into Stoic philosophy, individuals can cultivate a deeper sense of self-awareness and emotional resilience.

In essence, the marriage of mindfulness and Stoicism offers a powerful framework for living a meaningful and fulfilling life in today’s fast-paced world. Helping your community can begin at home! Adopting or fostering a dog or cat from a shelter can really help reduce stress on shelters, as well as giving an animal a chance at a better life. You can also encourage your kids to become pen pals with a senior in your community or host charity events such as lemonade stands or bake standards to raise money for good causes.

Help your community grow by connecting everyone with one cause!, like sustainability, a very important issue and something everyone can practice. DoSomething.org can help you to find volunteering opportunities in the sustainability and environmental wellness area.

Travel: Notes on Montenegro

Hey guys, Scott Asner here! Are you looking for a view filled holiday that checks all your  vacation boxes? I’ve got you covered with one of my favorite vacation spots: Montenegro. Cost effective and as rich in history as it is in beautiful landscapes, you are sure to have a good time whether you are a historian eager to widen your knowledge, an adventure junkie waiting for the next story to tell, or a family just looking make some memories.  

Enjoy the Beautiful Natural Sights of Montenegro 

In the West, Montenegro offers narrow beaches on the coast of the Adriatic sea in unison with small fishing villages dotted along the coast. If the beach is not for you, worry not. Further inland you will find stunning landscapes with rugged mountains, Fjord like Bays of Kodor and narrow beaches on the coast of the Adriatic sea. I would recommend visiting Skadar Lake which is the largest lake in the Balkans and one of the most prominent bird sanctuaries. Listen up adventure hunters, this one’s for you, if you’re up for the challenge go climb Montenegro’s highest peak Maja Kolata. Now, if you are eager to enjoy the history of the county, go take a walk through the historic part of Stari Grad and don’t forget to visit the monastery at Cetinje which is home to the mummified hand of St. John the Baptist.  

Getting Around the City 

The best way to get around without renting your own car would be by bus. Bus transport in Montenegro is cheap, safe and efficient, not to mention they also run anywhere along the coast. However, renting a car is still the best way to get around if you want to visit more remote areas.  

Delicious Food 

Montenegro cuisine derives from Yugoslavia. The traditional way of cooking is called Ispod and Kajmak (sour cream) is usually a main ingredient, as well as cow and sheep cheese. Montenegro locals are keen on eating lamb and veal rather than beef, and on the coast, fresh seafood is quite common. Catovica Mini and Stari Mini are excellent fish-based restaurants and some of the most scenic restaurants tucked away in the trees overlooking a river. Pod Volat is a meat focused restaurant with an excellent menu offering a taste into the country’s rich culture.
