Where Locals Go to Cool Down in Kansas City

Hey everyone, Scott Asner here!

When the temperature climbs and the humidity settles in, I like sharing where locals go to cool down in Kansas City instead of just gritting their teeth through it.

Kansas City summers get hot, and anyone who has lived here a few years knows the real relief spots are not always the ones tourists find first. These are the places I send friends and family when they ask me where to go once the heat gets serious.

Lake Jacomo: Kansas City’s Favorite Swimming Spot

Lake Jacomo sits inside Fleming Park in Blue Springs, and it is where a lot of locals head for a real swim instead of just a splash. The beach area gets busy on weekends, but weekday afternoons are quiet enough to actually relax. Bring a cooler and stay until the sun starts to dip.

Location: 7401 West Park Rd, Blue Springs, MO

Betty Rae’s Ice Cream, a Kansas City Classic

No cool down list feels complete without ice cream, and Betty Rae’s is the one locals actually line up for. The River Market location gets the after dinner crowd, while the Waldo shop draws families on their way home from the pool. Either spot is worth the wait.

Locations: 412 Delaware St, Kansas City, MO and 7140 Wornall Rd, Kansas City, MO

Neighborhood Pools and Splash Pads Across Kansas City

Not every hot day calls for a drive across town. Kansas City runs nine free splash pads at parks like Gillham, Douglas, and Sunnyside, and they are an easy way to cool the kids off between errands. If you want a full pool day instead, the Springs Aquatic Center north of the river has slides, a lazy river, and enough space that it never feels too crowded.

Loose Park: Kansas City’s Best Shade

Sometimes the best way to beat the heat is to just sit under a big tree, and Loose Park has some of the biggest in the city. The pond, the rose garden, and the walking paths all sit under enough shade that a picnic here in July does not feel like a bad idea.

Location: 5200 Pennsylvania Ave, Kansas City, MO

Scott Asner’s Tips for Staying Cool in Kansas City

A few things I have picked up after a lot of summers here:

•  Go early or go late. Late morning through mid afternoon is when the heat really hits.

•  Bring more water than you think you need, especially at the lake.

•  Check splash pad hours before you load up the car, since a few close on Mondays for maintenance.

•  Keep a swimsuit in your trunk all summer. You will use it more than you expect.

Kansas City heat is no joke once August rolls around, but the city gives you plenty of ways to fight back. Those are exactly where locals go to cool down in Kansas City once the temperature climbs, and I would take any one of them over sitting inside with the blinds shut.

Tips for Staying Cool in Kansas City

      • Keep an eye on the forecast: Plan indoor outings during the hottest parts of the day (typically 1–5 PM).
      • Stay hydrated: Even when you are inside, it is important to drink water—especially if you are out and about.
      • Dress for comfort: Light, breathable clothing can make a big difference.
      • Look for discounts: Many attractions offer midweek or online discounts during the summer.

Kansas City is full of ways to stay cool while making the most of the season. Whether you are looking for quiet time in a museum or high-energy fun at a trampoline park, these indoor activities offer something for everyone.
